Did You Know This....

Did You Know....

Dr. Seuss wrote “Green Eggs and Ham”, because of a dare his publisher Bennet Cerf made. Bennet Cerf bet Dr. Seuss $50 that he could not write a children’s story using ONLY 50 words. 49 of which were one syllable words.
And that's just what he did. The words included:

a am and anywhere are
be boat box car could dark do eat eggs fox
goat good green ham here
house I if in let
like may me mouse not
on or rain Sam say
see so thank that the
them there they train tree
try will with would you

Go ahead and count them...I did. This was one amazing author!

Interview with Yertle the Turtle

So before we get the scoop on the book Yertle the Turtle...lets take a look at what is happening.

As the Seussical reporter I like to get the scoop from all angles. Lets go talk to Yertle:

Susie Loo: Yertle, may I ask you a few questions about your story?

Yertle the Turtle: Well, I haven't got much time, but I guess so.

SL: Thank you! First of all why don't you tell my readers what happened. You were sitting on a rock I believe and--

YT: Yes, I was just sitting on my rock.
I am...rather was king of all Sala-ma-Sond.
Which really is the very, very, very best pond.
I was sitting, just sitting enjoying the sun, when I thought up a scheme...I mean an idea for fun. I'd call a few turtles to stack up on each others backs, if I would've been smart I wouldn't have let in that Mack.
Then I climbed up on top, I had a much better view, I was happy, content, for a minute or two. After all I was king of a cow, mule, house and cat, and everything that I could see beyond that. But to tell you the truth it wasn't that much, so I called more turtles over to stack up like such.

SL: Excuse me Yertle, but aren't you forgetting something?

YT: So I--what's that? Forget something? Why of course not, I am--was the king!

SL: That may be so, but I thought you were quite please with you "kingdom," until Mack spoke up.

YT: Yes, you're right I guess, I suppose that is true. I was happy until that Mack started to spew...
Out complaints, and complains, one after another. About how he was hungry, he's such a bother.
It made me so mad, it made me see, that my kingdom wasn't quite big enough for me.
After that I call over 200 more, so now I had 209, then I started to really calm down, I tell you I really felt fine.
But all good things must come to an end I suppose, because down there in that stack a voice soon arose.
I won't drop names...it was Mack again so you see, he had nothing better to do than to bother me.
I was king, and he was only little 'ol Mack, who complained that he had a pain in his back.
While shouting at him I got a surprise...I looked up and saw the moon in the sky.
It was higher than me, how could it be.
So I thought '5,607 turtles is what I need', so I sent for them all, I saw them coming with speed.
But before they arrived I felt my feet start to shake, it felt like the coming of a great big earthquake.
And before I knew it, I, king of Sala-ma-Sond, I landed plunk in the mud of my pond.
I don't know how it happened, but in my head, way in the back. I have a feeling it was caused by little 'ol Mack.

SL: Well, thank you Yertle, I know you're very busy, so I'll let you get back to...whatever it is that you do. Tomorrow we'll meet Mack and hear his side of the story.

That Dr. Seuss' real name was Theodor Seuss Geisel.

Wanted: Recipe For Making Green Eggs and Ham

Think of ways to make green eggs and ham...an edible way that is. If you think of something post a comment and let us all know.
Here are some ideas that I found:

Now that we've gotten the summary and researched the deeper meaning of Dr. Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham." Let's have a little fun and watch the cartoon:

The Scoop on "Green Eggs and Ham"

As I promised, I'm going to get into the deeper meaning of Dr Seuss' "Green Eggs and Ham".

I found quite a few deeper meanings, from political to religious. But before I get into those I want to tell you what I first thought of. The themes I saw included: Persistence (by Sam of course), judging a book by it's cover (or in this case, eggs by their color), close mindedness (BFT didn't even want to try green eggs and ham) and humbleness (once BFT did try them, he admitted that he did like them, he didn't let his pride get in the way.)
Those are what I thought of before researching...you probably thought of those too. Now I'll go through some other thoughts that I found and read. Once you read them you can decide which ideas make the most sense to you.

Political: Sam is thought to be Uncle Sam or the United States government, and the BFT as us, the nation. Perhaps he is saying that the government wants us to think a certain way, do certain things. That the nation was fighting it, but gave in and really liked what they were fighting after all. Or they were so beaten down, that they just chose to accept it.

Business: Sam is representing marketers or commercials, ads in the newspaper, magazines, ect... Giving BFT or (us as consumers) choices. "You don't want to buy it now, but what about later, what about with this or that?" This one reminded me of sales clerks in stores or mall keosks...they even follow you sometimes. At times you really don't want the product they are selling, but those clerks are persistent...it doesn't always pay off and sometimes it does.

Religious: From a Christian perspective: God is called the Great I AM (Exedous). Sam is thought to be God, because the name Sam-I-Am. We don't always want what God has planned for us, we can fight it, but God doesn't give up on us. In the end we find that God knew best after all. That we wasted all that time fighting Him, when we really could've been enjoying our "green eggs and ham."
The same thing could be thought of as Jesus being Sam. There are things He gives (or tells) us that might be hard to swallow, but in the end it's the best for us.
Others say that Sam is Ezekiel (a prophet from the Old Testement). He had a hard job...he had to go out and tell people (like the BFT) about about God and His ways (green eggs and ham). People didn't like the sound of what they heard so they turned away. But Ezekiel knew what God had planned for him to do, so he kept spreading His Word.

All of that is a lot to think about...so I'll go now and read another Dr. Seuss book. Maybe Yertle the Turtle.

Green Eggs and...Ham?

I don't know about you, but green eggs are not on my top 10 greatest foods list. I think I'd be like the...big furry thing that doesn't want to try the green eggs and ham. And like the big furry thing...(I'll call him BFT) I'd probably be getting a little annoyed too. Let me set the stage for you:

Picture yourself...sitting down...relaxing (in whatever way you are choosing to relax. Reading a book, napping, listening to music), when all of the sudden a small innocent looking thing comes riding by on an odd...dog-ish looking thing, holding a sign that says "I am Sam". (Now if it were me I would think I was dreaming that I was in a 1920's movie (before sound and the taling was done by signs). But enough about me.) Then, before you really have time to think about what you just saw, this same little thing...I mean Sam, comes by again, this time holding a sign reading "Sam I Am".
You proceed on saying that you do not like Sam (in rhyme of course). I don't know if you have had a run in with Sam and his gross green eggs before or if you are one of those people who don't like things that speak with signs. Either way you don't like Sam.
Then this impertenent Sam has the audacity to stick a plate of green eggs and ham in your face...and then ask you: "Do you like green eggs and ham?"
Which you (of course) respond, NO! (In rhyme.)
Then this Sam proceeds to follow you everywhere you go, asking if you would like the green eggs and ham: here. there, in a house, with a mouse, in a box, with a fox, in a car, in a tree, on a train, in the rain etc...
You cannot get away from this Sam. You've tried running away, hiding away, pushing and shoving Sam away, but for being such a small Sam...he doesn't seem to get discouraged. He just keeps coming up with new ideas.
Finally you try the one last option you know of to get rid of little...annoying, urggh, Sam. You decide to try those green eggs and ham.
You try them so he'll let you be...you try them, eat them then you see...that you like green eggs and ham...so you thank this Sam-I-Am. You say you'll eat them here and there, you say you'll eat them anywhere.

So that's the story, be thinking of the themes you see, because tomorrow I'll go into the deeper meanings that I've found.

The Scoop on Dr. Seuss

Hello Everyone,

I'm Tiffani, (but soon you'll know me as Susie Loo the "suessical" reporter) and I love Dr. Seuss books. Even though Dr. Seuss wrote his books for children, I'm here to say that you're never too old to love Dr. Suess. I'll give you a couple reasons why:

1. They all have something good to tell us...whether it's a prominent moral or not.

2. They're bunches of fun to read!

3. Dr. Seuss wrote his books with (what some people would call) a deeper meaning or a moral for life. Meaning what you see is not all you get. You need to dig deep down and read between the lines...which is exactly what I'm going to do.

So I'm going to read Dr. Seuss books, write about them, then tell you the most popular...and not so popular "hidden meanings." In between times I will share quotes and interesting facts about this amazing man, that we know of as Dr. Seuss.

At the end of this blog I will have read most...if not all of Dr. Seuss' children's books and found out the "scoop" on Dr. Seuss.

Talk To You Soon.
